French Holiday Cottage to let - Our cottage - La Porcherie - is situated in beautiful countryside in a small hamlet approximately 5km from Thury-Harcourt in Calvados, Normandy. Thury-Harcourt is a busy little town with all amenities including supermarket, swimming pool, bars, restaurants, canoeing centre, cinema and weekly market. Suisse Normande (mini Switzerland) is a particularly lovely part of France with the river Orne, its gorges, spectacular scenery, pretty villages and abundance of outdoor activities. 

The cottage is next door to our 300 year old house and has a large open plan living space with kitchen, dining area and double bed sofa. There is a bedroom upstairs with lovely views over the countryside and it has 2 x single beds or a king size. Also downstairs is a shower room with WC. Outside is a private garden with table, chairs and BBQ for your own use and a terrace shared with ourselves. The cottage is full of character, with beams on the ceilings and is heated for cosy winter lets. We also offer linen hire, grocery packs and laundry facilities.

This French Holiday Cottage is the ideal place from which to introduce you to Calvados and to evoke the daily pleasures which Normandy has to offer; breathing in the fragrance of the apples, lending an ear to the backwash of the sea, finding oneself steeped in ancient or more recent history, discovering an exceptional heritage and sampling the delights of varied and rich local fare.
While staying in our holiday cottage, there are so many things to do in the immediate area whether you sample the relaxed French pace of life or explore this typically French province.
The following gives an example of an impossibly packed week, with a variety of suggested choices for a somewhat hectic holiday in Normandy. Because you will never achieve all of these in a week AND find time to relax and enjoy the stunning French countryside, you'll just have to book for at least two weeks or come back again later !
French Holiday Day 1
You'll need to be up bright and early to see all of these:-
  • The floral coast and its string of renowned seaside resorts; Deauville, the most elegant, Trouville, the most picturesque, Cabourg, the most romantic.

  • Honfleur, city of art, city of history and the Coast of Grace overlooking the Seine Estuary.

  • The Normandy Landing Beaches, the Hoc Point and the Mulberry Harbour in Arromanches.

  • Grandcamp-Maisey and Port-en-Bessin; lively fishing ports.

  • Vast and safe sandy beaches along the Pearl Coast and the Bessin, from Ouistreham to Corsuelles.

  • The Orne Bay nature reserve

  • The surprising architecture of the 19th Century villas in Villiers, Houlgate, Cabourg and Trouville.

  • Excursions out to sea from Honlfleur, Trouville and Grandcamp-Maisey.

French Holiday Day 2
Well day 1 was a challenge but we're barely started! here goes:-
  • Swiss Normandy: Clecy, the Orne Valley from Thury Harcourtto Pont d'Ouilly and the impressive view from the "Roche d'Oetre.
  • The Gorges of the river Vire; the site and sound oof theDoulevre viaduct in the heart of Bocage area.
  • The regional park of the Cotentin and Bessin marais (marchlands).
  • The "Payes d'Auge" typical postcard of Normandy with it's villages such as Beaumont, Beuvron en Auge and Orbec.
  • The "Breche au Diable" (Devil's Breach) near Falaise.
  • The forest of Grimbosq, Saint- Sever and Balleroy.
  • The Dathee lake on the outskirts of Vire.
  • Follow the tourist trails; in particular , the Cider Trail, the Trail of Tradition and the Vire and the Souleuvre Valley Trail.
French Holiday Day 3
Right let's get going:-
  • This region of France has a high culture level, so you can't help but to be impressed with the "Cities of art"; Caen, Bayeux and Honfleur, the Mecca of Norman heritage.
  • Castles; the medieval fortress in Falaise, the chateaux in S. Germain de Livet, jewel of the "Pays d'Auge", in Fontaine-Henry and Balleroy and the the Chateaux de Vendeuvre.
  • Churches and Abbeys; Basilica of St. Theresa of Lisieux, Bayeux and Lisieux cathedrals, teha church of St. Catherine in Hornfleur, the Romanesque abbeys in Caen.
  • Museums: the Fine Arts and Normandy Museums in Caen; the museums of miniature in the Chateau de Vendeuvre; the Eugene Boudin museum in Hornfleur, not forgetting the Bayeux Tapestry.
  • Tours of our heritage by night.
French Holiday Day 4
By now you need a day to rest by the pool but NO! there's too much to see......
  • The fortified farms and mansions in the "Pays d'Auge" and "Bessin" areas; Argouges, Crepon, Coupesarte and Canapville amongst others.
  • Parks and gardens; La Colline aux Oiseaux (Bird Hill) inCaen, the gardens of the following Chateux:- Vendeuvre, Brecy, Thury Harcourt, the archaelogical garden at Vieux.
  • Chateaux in Benouville, Pontecoulant, Colombieres and Crevecoeur.
  • Museums : Baron Gerard's museum of automatons in Falaise and the mine museum in Molay-Littry
  • The abbey in Juaye-Mondaye, the churches in Malloue near Vire, and Thaon, in the Bessin area. 
  • The remarkable half timbered houses in Orbec.
French Holiday Day 5
Right. It's history day - see lets go!
  • Queen Mathilda'sTapestry in Bayeux, which tells the Conqueror's epic tale.
  • Falaise castle, the Men's and Ladies' Abbeys and the castle in Caen, founded by William.
  • The main sites, places of remembrance and museums of the Historical Sites of the Battle of Normandy, the Memorial, a Museum for peace in Caen, the Normandy Landings museum and the Mulberry Harbour in Arromanches, Hoc Point, the American War Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, the German War Cemetery in La Cambe,
  • The battery in Longues-sur-Mer, Pegasus Bridge, the Museum on the Battle of Normandy in Bayeux and Arromanches 360.
  • Follow the historical trails dedicated to the Battle of Normandy.
French Holiday Day 6
All cultured up? today we'll concentrate on leisure pursuits.
  • Rambling (whatever the season) on foot, by horse, by bicycle.
  • A visit to a thalassotherapy centre.
  • Rock climbing, hang-gliding, canoeing on the River Orne.
  • Bungy jumping from the top of the Souleuvre viaduct.
  • Golfing on one of Calvados' 12 courses.
  • Windsurfing, sand- yachting, speed-sailing, sailing (dinghy or catamaran).
  • Fishing for sea trout on France's best river, the River Touques.

  • Don't miss the rambler's "TOPOGUIDES", essential to make the most of the 4000km (phew! it's gonna be a long day) of walkway which Calvados has to offer.
French Holiday Day 7
You'll need to kick back and have some entertainment today - so here goes-
  • Celebrations of the sea in Hornfleur, Trouville and Port-en-Bessin in particular.
  • The Deauville American Film Festival and the Cabourg Romantic Film Festival.
  • The main equestrian events: horse-racing, polo, yearling sales, show-jumping and the annual rendezvous of "EQUI'DAYS".
  • The Reiers Festival of Arts and Crafts.
  • The medieval festival in Bayeux, the "Virevoltes" Festival in Vire, the "Hivernales" in Falaise, the "Summer Nights" in Caen and the numerous cultural events during the summer season.
  • The celebrations of Therese at the end of each summers inLisieux.
  • The "Swinging Deauville" jazz festival.
  • Commemorations of June 6 and the "Son et Lumiere" in Benouville.
  • Dramatised tours of Caen.
