The
Sea
From the banks of the Seine to the mouth of the Vire, the coast
of Calvados boasts miles of sandy beaches mingled with rocky
cliffs and overhangs. Whereas summer has a carefree appeal,
winter's charms are bracing. But whatever the season, the sea
invites the visitor to simply relax or enjoy a romantic stroll,
to take up windsports or watersports.
Rivers and Bocage.
From the East to the West, as you amble along the rivers, paths
and qiet roadways, Calvados will never fail to surprise you with
the variety and wealth of its countryside. Each escapade is a
challenge for the walker, each viewpoint revealing something
new. Hills and valleys, plains and meadows, forests and bocages
set the pace in a land of lush nature.
French
Architectural Heritage.
Centuries of history and a prosperous yet tumultuous past have
left Calvados with a religious cultural and architectural
heritage of exceptional richness. the countless Romanesque
churches and abbeys, Gothic cathedrals, Renaissance chateaux and
medieval forts; the ancient bourgeois residences, the fortified farms
in the Bessin area and the half timbered mansions of the Pays
d'Auge. Today the very symbol of Normandy - are all proof of the
wealth of the past.
Contemporary architecture also has its place. Take for instance
the Pont de Normandie (Normandy Bridge), a spectacular piece of
workmanship of exceptional size and grandeur. As you discover
the Seine Estuary, you will note the unique luminescence which
reflects the shades and changing moods of the Normandy skies;
the same light which has inspired and captivated so many
artists, some among the greatest and which still attracts
numerous painters today. |
